Fowler: Carolina Panthers win NFL.com’s Greatest Uniform Ever” contest
The Carolina Panthers have officially won NFL.com s Greatest Uniform in NFL History contest in a landslide with their black-on-black look. And that victory will ensure the Panthers will wear their black jerseys,Kareem Martin 2014 NFL Draft preseason scouting re, black pants and blue socks together more often in 2013,2013 NFL Preview- AFC North- Looking at Baltimore, which won t be hard they have worn that combination only once in franchise history. Oh,NFL Notebook- Broncos suspend pair of execs without pay, you re definitely going to see black jerseys and black pants some more now, said Jackie Miles,Arizona Cardinals cheerleader is an Iraq veteran, Carolina s head equipment manager since its inception. This hasn t gone unnoticed in our building. I ve always liked the look myself. Now that this has happened, I m going to push for it more often. Miles said the Panthers are locked into black jerseys five times already this season: in the preseason at Philadelphia, and in late-season home games starting in mid-November against New England, Tampa Bay, the New York Jets and New Orleans. They could wear black pants as well for any or all of those games and likely will for at least a couple. The black-on-black look does contain one bolt of color the electric blue socks. Miles said that wide receiver Steve Smith was responsible for that. Miles kept the black pants a secret from every Panther player except Smith in 2012, but told No.89 about it and then let Smith choose the sock color. The Panthers debuted the look last November. Tracy Porter has a bitter reaction upon having to give No. 24 to Charles Woodson
(USA Today Sports Images)
Many players are very territorial about their jersey numbers. Usually the issue gets settled, sometimes with a large cash payment,NFL Star Jeremy Shockey, and that's that.
Cornerback , who is best known for sealing Super Bowl XLIV for New Orleans with an interception return for a touchdown, didn't seem to want to give No. 24 to Raiders teammate . This has been and it didn't seem like about the matter. Porter signed with Oakland first, got No. 24 and really didn't want to give it up. He wasn't handing it over even though Woodson spent eight seasons wearing that number with Oakland to start his career, and he's Charles Woodson.
[]
So when Porter tweeted out the news that No. 24 was handed to Woodson right as Raiders camp is about to begin, his bitterness seemed pretty authentic.

Well you Raiders fans...your guy has 24. It was TAKEN from me and given to him. .....too funny how this biz works
— ♌Tracy Porter♌ (@TracyPorter)
Not mad at all...it's just the principle and the way it was handled.....said my piece, now back to football. — ♌Tracy Porter♌ (@TracyPorter)
Perhaps Porter,Trey Anastasio wears Russell Wilson shirt during P, who is more known for wearing No. 22 but can't have that for the Raiders because Taiwan Jones does,Sharing the wealth has made NFL owners the richest in the world, was just kidding around and this isn't a big deal. It doesn't seem that way on the surface, and there's history of players getting very serious about their jersey numbers. And, the most likely outcome is Porter will laugh this off when asked about it. We'll let you be the judge of how serious Porter really is about this.
The good thing for Raiders fans,Dolphins have first fight of training camp, who pleaded with Woodson to return to Oakland this offseason when he was a free agent, is all of their No. 24 Woodson jerseys won't look out of place this season.

Washington DC, Chicago, Pittsburgh
I spent last week in Washington DC and the area is ablaze with Redskin mania. Every cab driver, shopkeeper and person I encountered is in a state of excitement about the prospects of the team. RG III could be elected Mayor in a landslide. It is stunning to witness coming from teamless Southern California where the resurgence of the Dodgers,Adongo swaps Kings for NFL, demise of the Angels,NFL Luxury Suites and Ticket Packages on Sale Now, and how the Lakers will fare without Dwight Howard are central sports topics. The National Football League has taken a firm grip as this country’s dominant sport and certain cities have fan bases that are at a heightened level of interest.
For the better part of the last century, it was Major League Baseball that was America’s Pastime. It was the most important sport to media and fans. That started changing, as the NFL-television partnership became a marriage made in heaven. Last season there were weeks where the Top 5 rated Nielson television shows were nighttime NFL football. “Football Night in America”–NBC’s pre-game show was rated #3 one week. To put that into perspective, more Americans were watching a pre-game show than “Dancing With the Stars”, “Two and a Half Men”,Seahawks sign RB Ray Holley, waive WR Justin Veltung, or anything else. Stadia are filled with sold out luxury boxes and premium seating. Millions of fans follow games on every platform of content supply. As many as 40 million people participate in fantasy leagues. An NFL Network, Direct TV and multiple outlets provide more than just games–endless highlights, analysis, and other programming. The second most popular team sport in this country right now is college football. We will cover the reason for football’s primacy in a later column.
There are certain cities that have an unbelievable density of hard-core fandom. Washington DC is one of them. Dan Snyder, Redskin owner and his executives have done a superb marketing job in extending their brand in creative ways. They have provided fans with an endless array of opportunity to interact and identify. But this tradition has gone on for a long time. In the heyday of “Hog” football there were more local radio and television shows on the air featuring players than any other city except Chicago. The front page of the national and international newspaper that along with the NY Times is the “paper of record” for the country featured a huge color photo of RG III on the front page. Cities like Washington are “gateway” teams with huge national following. The lobby of an “away game” hotel looks like “Hog Central”–Chicago may have had Michael Jordan, but that is a football city. In 1985 the entire city looked like one big Bear memorabilia store. There were so many local radio and television shows featuring Bears that Safety Gary Fencik, a generally anonymous position,ESPN analyst lists Schaub as a top, had his own. I represented Quarterback Jim Harbaugh and it was impossible to ever finish a meal in any public restaurant. When the Bears are in a Super Bowl the host city swells to unmanageable proportions because Bear fans travel.
Pittsburgh has a hardcore “Steeler Nation” that is loyal through and through. I represented Quarterbacks Neil O’Donnell, Kordell Stewart,49ers CB Tarell Brown voids $2 million base salary, and Ben Roethlisberger in his early years. There was no better place to be a starting player. We released a “Big Ben” T shirt in the local market in Ben’s first year and the sales exceeded the population of the metro market, meaning it would have encompassed every last person were it not for multiple sales. The Rooney family has done a sensational job of keeping that team competitive notwithstanding the loss of key players.
Dallas is another “gateway” team, their fans live and die with the Cowboys. Jerry Jones took the lead on introducing marketing techniques into the NFL and was a visionary. Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, has been incredibly creative and New England loves their Patriots. There are many other cities. But players know the franchises where fans take football seriously and support their teams through thick and thin, and love playing there.
Are you ready for some football?

Colin Kaepernick leads NFL jersey sales for spring, early summer
Yesterday, ESPN's Darren Rovell reported that for the second quarter of the fiscal year, covering April 1 to June 30. The article does not provide numbers on how many jerseys were sold, but it is one more sign of his ever-growing popularity.
Kap's rise to fame since taking over as starting quarterback for the has been dramatic. Before Alex Smith was concussed Week 10 against the , Kaepernick was not on the national radar, and was in a fairly limited position on the 49ers fan radar.
After playing the second half and overtime against the Rams, his stock began to climb quickly the following week against the . In front of a national audience on Monday Night Football, Kap put together a strong performance, completing 16 of 23 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
He was an impact player every week the rest of the season, and while he and the 49ers came up short in , his status as a high profile quarterback was set. Although Kap has put in plenty of work to get ready for the 2013 season, he has also remained in the spotlight. He to promote physical fitness. He at a game. He was at the ESPYs. And of course there were the incidents that drew negative attention. He had the cap incident, and he drew criticism for his choice of wardrobe at the ESPYs.
However, amidst all this,NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Titans look to S Bernard Pollard for leadership, he remains a hugely popular NFL player, and arguably the most popular athlete in the Bay Area. Stephen Curry and Buster Posey are plenty popular,Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin joins Twitter, but Kap appears to be, or at least is on pace to become the Bay Area's first cross-over mega-star of the social media era. And so it is not surprising to see his jersey sales spiking as they are. If he is able to build on his strong 2012 season,Eight Coastal Mississippians in NFL camps, I suspect we'll see his jersey sales remain at or near the top.

With video: Commissioner Roger Goodell says NFL 'proud to have' Browns' Jimmy Haslam as owner
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear today that, for now, the league will continue to stand by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam amid a federal investigation into a fraud scheme orchestrated by Pilot Flying J, the Knoxville, Tenn.-based truck-stop empire run by Haslam and owned by his family.
“Jimmy Haslam is a man of great integrity,” said Goodell, who made an appearance at the Browns’ headquarters to promote safety at a “Heads Up Football” youth skills clinic. “We're proud to have him as an owner in the NFL and think he's going to be a great owner for the Cleveland Browns and their fans here.
“He's as disappointed as anybody in what happened at Pilot J and he's working hard to fix it and correct those issues, both from a structural standpoint and to make amends. He's kept me very much involved. I think ... as he tells me I was one of his first calls to inform me what was happening after he learned about it, and he's been great at keeping us informed.”
The FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided the headquarters of Pilot Flying J April 15,NSA Workers Sometimes Spy on Significant Others, and an affidavit made public days later alleged that Haslam had knowledge of fuel rebate fraud that cheated trucking-company customers out of millions of dollars. So far, seven former Pilot Flying J employees have pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Goodell said Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J, has told him privately what he has maintained publicly – that he didn’t know about the fraud scheme until the FBI released its affidavit.
“Yes, absolutely [I asked him if he knew about the fraud],” Goodell said. “And he’s been very clear that he’s had no knowledge of that, and he’s been clear publicly and clear with you all.”
In addition to the criminal investigation, about 20 trucking companies have filed civil lawsuits against Pilot Flying J. Eight of them have agreed to a settlement, and Haslam has sent checks to several other companies in an effort to make restitution.
“He’s been very proactive,” Goodell said. “He’s made numerous statements about it. I think he’s taken responsibility for it. He’s spoken up. As I said before, he’s a man of integrity. This company has meant a lot to him and his family, and he’s more determined than ever to make it right.”
Some question whether Haslam’s finances could be drained enough to force him to sell the team, which he bought from Randy Lerner last year for about $1 billion.
When training camp opened to the public July 25, Haslam tried to alleviate concerns that he’ll be forced to sell the Browns. Haslam, who's attending practice today,Bucs Jackson showing he can be complete receiver, insisted there are no cash flow issues and he’s optimistic about the outcome of the investigation.
“The fans should not worry,” Haslam said. “Our family is going to own this asset for a long, long time.”
Goodell said he has no reason to doubt Haslam’s hopeful attitude about the outcome of the probe.
“You know, most of my reports are coming from Jimmy, and he shares everything else, and I have every reason to believe him,” Goodell said. “We have not been given anything that would be inconsistent with that.”
Goodell repeatedly sidestepped questions about what the league’s course of action would be in the event Haslam is indicted.
“We’re not going to play the hypothetical game,” Goodell said. “Right now he’s addressing the issues. We’re confident he’s going to deal with it properly.”
At what point would the league become more involved?
“Right now, this is an issue where he’s had some people in his organization that have obviously not conducted themselves in a way that’s consistent with what he wants,” Goodell said. “He’s fixing it, and he’s got to do that. Those things happen in big organizations.
“Jimmy is more disappointed than anybody. But I don’t think it’s a matter for us at this moment.”
Goodell was asked if owners accused of crimes would be disciplined similarly to players accused of crimes.
“We actually hold ownership to a higher standard and management,UFC 164- Early Preview and Predictions for Henderson vs. Pettis, Barnett vs. Mir_0,” Goodell said. “And I think we’ve proven that in what we’ve done. It’s not just accused. As you know, in our policy,Exclusive Deals on Natural Spa Products_1, oftentimes we let the criminal process unfold because you need to do that to find out the real facts. Sometimes we don’t have all the facts, and we need to do that. What we look at is multiple offenders. As you know,Indian culture, not chow mein, is to blame for sex crimes, that’s a real focus for us.”
The league’s owners unanimously approved Haslam’s purchase of the Browns in October after the NFL's finance committee also gave its blessing. The FBI has been investigating Pilot Flying J since May 2011.
Goodell, though, defended the league’s vetting process, insisting it wasn’t flawed.
“No, I don’t think [it was flawed],” Goodell said. “This was a surprise to [Haslam] and to his senior level management. From that standpoint, I don’t think he was aware of it, and I don’t know anyway we could have been aware of it. It was not disclosed to us.”
Haslam bought a minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, so the league examined him then. However, Goodell said the NFL’s vetting of Haslam before his purchase of the Browns was not any less thorough than usual.
“No, we go through the same process on any circumstance,” Goodell said. “When you’re going through a controlling ownership position, that’s a big step up so we don’t just pass that off. We do the same vetting process. Obviously he knows people in the league after being an owner, so there were certain aspects of that which were easier. But we didn’t short-circuit anything.”
Goodell conceded the scandal is not ideal for the Browns or the league.
“You never want to see this kind of thing happen, particularly to a partner in the league,” Goodell said. “So obviously his partners care a great deal about him, and as a partner they want to see him getting off to a good start. This is not what anybody intended, not anybody anticipated, but he’s a man that I think everyone truly respects in the NFL.”
But Goodell shot down the idea that the probe will distract the Browns.
“I don’t believe it’s distracting anybody in that building, and that’s what really matters at the end of the day,” Goodell said. “And Jimmy obviously is focused on that, but he’s got a lot of great people that he hired to do the job. He always intended to stay involved with Pilot J.”
Goodell also expressed confidence that Haslam can still prove to be the man who delivers a winner to Cleveland.
“I think Jimmy Haslam came into this with a mindset that he was going to do everything possible to get this franchise turned around in a positive direction and a team that this community will be proud of, not just in any single year, but consistently and to create a winner,” Goodell said. “And he’s brought in great talent. He’s brought in great people. He set the organization obviously in a different direction. I think that’s all positive and good for the fans here and ultimately good for the NFL.”

Original Madden NFL designer awarded $11 million in EA lawsuit
A US District Court jury in the Northern District of California has ruled in favor of , the original credited designer for EA's Madden NFL series, in his lawsuit against publisher Electronic Arts, awarding him $11 million. Antonick's against EA sought unpaid royalties for iterations in the series released between 1990 and 1996.
The jury found that games released during that time "were virtually identical to the original version of Madden NFL Football, developed by Antonick," according to a press release issued by Hagens Berman, the law firm representing Antonick. The release also notes that Antonick and his attorneys will "seek to appeal previous rulings that excluded Super Nintendo games and fraud claims from the jury deliberations."
Antonick's case will now move forward to the next phase, in which the court will decide whether EA owes Antonick royalties for games in the series that launched from 1997 to today.

Verdict in EA Madden IP Lawsuit Jury Finds in Favor of Original Madden Programmer
After three days of deliberations, a jury in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California today ruled in favor of Robin Antonick, the original designer and developer of Electronic Arts' (NASDAQ: EA) best-selling Madden NFL Football games, awarding him what should be, with interest, more than $11 million. It also gives him the ability to pursue the same claims against EA for games released after 1996-games with significantly higher revenues.
The case alleges that EA and Antonick signed a series of publishing and development contracts, culminating in a 1986 agreement that requires EA to pay him royalties on any derivative works related to the original version of EA Madden, including current annual releases,Giants' Ball Girl Fights Infielder For Foul Popup, and prohibits EA from using his confidential information. The lawsuit claims that EA failed to pay millions of dollars in royalties owed to Antonick and to keep his work confidential as required by the contract.
The jury found that several of EA's games,Former Alabama stars Dee Milliner, Chance Warmack, published between 1990-1996, were virtually identical to the original version of Madden NFL Football, developed by Antonick, and used substantially similar plays and formations. With mandatory prejudgment interest, the verdict should entitle Antonick to more than $11 million.
"This is a tremendous victory," said Rob Carey, partner at Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP and one of Antonick's attorneys. "In many ways, this trial was a test of each party's version of events. The jury uniformly rejected the idea that this game was developed without Robin's work. It is, if nothing, a good omen for the next phase of the litigation."
A future phase of the trial will be held to determine whether EA is responsible for paying Antonick for games published between 1997 and the present, where revenues exceed $3 billion.
Antonick and his attorneys still plan to seek additional compensation during this stage of the litigation from the judge, who reserved for himself to decide claims for disgorgement of EA's profits. They will also seek to appeal previous rulings that excluded Super Nintendo games and fraud claims from the jury deliberations.
Today, the jury found that Antonick's game and the EA games shared substantial similarity in the plays and formations available to the user,Danica McKellar makes out with Avril Lavigne, and were virtually identical as a whole.
Antonick is also represented by Leonard Aragon of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP,Percy Harvin to have surgery after receiving secon, and Hagens Berman co-counseled with the Paynter Law Firm.
