Judge orders NFL,, concussion plaintiffs to talk
PHILADELPHIA -- A federal judge has ordered the NFL and former players to negotiate over whether claims of concussion-related injuries will move forward in court or in arbitration,Thursday (New NFL bag policy will be sight to see).
U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody of Philadelphia had planned to rule July 22 in a legal fight involving about 4,Seahawks WR Harvin has hip surgery,200 former players and the league.
However, in an order Monday, she told the two sides to try and resolve how the case will proceed by going through mediation with retired U.S. District Judge Layn Phillips of Oklahoma. The retirees want the right to sue the league, while the NFL insists the claims fall under the collective bargaining agreement, and should be resolved in arbitration.
"We respect and will comply with the court's order regarding mediation and will be available to meet with Judge Phillips at his direction," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement.
Phillips is to report back to Brody on any progress by Sept. 3. Brody also implemented a gag order on lawyers for both sides.
Many former players say they suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions and believe they stem from on-field concussions. The league says safety has always been a top priority.
Each side hired a powerful Washington litigator to make its case to Brody during arguments in April.
NFL lawyer Paul Clement argued that teams bear the chief responsibility for health and safety under the contract, along with the players' union and the players themselves.
"The clubs are the ones who had doctors on the sidelines who had primary responsibility for sending players back into the game," Clement said after the hearing.
The players argued that the league glorified violence through NFL Films,NFL maibag- NFC North getting expensive, thereby profiting from dangerous hits to the head.
Players' lawyer David Frederick also accused the league of concealing studies linking concussions to neurological problems for decades,Roger Goodell on Aaron Hernandez- 'It's, in part by hiring a rheumatologist to lead the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee, which was created in 1994.
"It set up a sham committee designed to get information about neurological risks, but in fact spread misinformation," Frederick argued.
In recent years, a string of former NFL players and other concussed athletes have been diagnosed after their deaths with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, including popular Pro Bowler Junior Seau and lead plaintiff Ray Easterling. Both committed suicide last year.
About one-third of the league's 12,000 former players have joined the litigation since Easterling's suit was filed in 2011.
Brody, during the oral arguments, pondered whether NFL head injuries belong in arbitration under terms of the contract.
"It has to be really specific," she said. "That's what I have to wrestle with."

At a time when more and more former players are joining concussion lawsuits against the league, the league is trying to do more to bring former players into the family and help steer them toward programs designed to help them.
According to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, the NFL is launching an initiative called the to help connect alumni.
Troy Vincent, the league’s senior vice president of player engagement,NFL changing Pro Bowl roster format, also removing, said the goal of was to help alumni connect with each other and their old teams,Predicting Breakout Camp, Preseason NFL Stars at Every Posit, and point players toward certain resources.
“We have to take care of each other like we did on the field,” Vincent said.
They’ve enlisted 19 players to help with the effort — including Hall of Famers Rod Woodson and John Randle along with others including Chad Pennington, Warrick Dunn and Aeneas Williams — who will meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell next week during an orientation program.
“Nobody wants the game to leave them,” Vincent said. “We all understand our bodies have an expiration date. Many of us want to still be associated with the game but there are very few opportunities and places where that can exist.”

Fast forward to 2013, and teams around the NFL are taking the temperature of player relationships in light of Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper's use of a racial slur that was captured on video during a Kenny Chesney concert.
The Eagles fined Cooper, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday the league would take no further action.

"It is big on any team; it doesn't have to be sports," Forte said. "That's a big part of life. You can't have anybody with racism and stuff like that. You can't be a whole group and bond together if there is that type of stuff going on, especially in the locker room.

Stephen Morris might be 'most talented' college football QB, says NFL scout
One NFL analyst had the chance to watch Johnny Manziel, AJ McCarron, Devin Gardner and many other quarterbacks at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana -- and yet came away thinking Miami's Stephen Morris might be the quarterback with the most upside in college football.

The division champs can’t afford to get comfortable. What looked like a changing of the guard last season for the now looks like a looming dogfight to stay on top what with Robert Griffin III battling back from his knee injury. Free agency and the NFL draft brought in limited big name help. Did that stop them from adding some real talent?
Offense – Jordan Reed
Penalties from the NFL made it difficult for the Washington Redskins to get anything of major significance done in improving their roster. However, that didn’t stop them from using what they had wisely. An excellent example is tight end Jordan Reed. With Fred Davis still in doubt because of his injury last season, the need for some insurance was obvious. A lot of people overlooked Reed in the draft but his potential is clear. Scouts saw him as an excellent move tight end that could create mismatches in the passing game because of his smooth route running and ability to catch and run. He also can play different positions much like his former teammate Aaron Hernandez did for the Patriots. Provided Reed doesn’t (allegedly) murder anybody he could have a big impact in the capital for Robert Griffin III.
Defense – Phillip Thomas
Another draft pick that got overlooked. Safety was a big pain for Washington last season and they were fortunate to find Phillip Thomas still on the board in the 4th round. He isn’t a complete player but scouts love his ability to play center field,NFL game official finalist Sarah Thomas is working, going up and batting passes and grabbing interceptions. He had eight last season for Fresno State, a remarkable feat considering his junior year was cut short by a gruesome leg injury. That kind of grit and determination is something the Redskins will want the back end of their secondary. If he can improve his tackling ability and refine some technique issues it won’t take long for him to make noise on defense.
Special Teams – Sav Rocca
Rich Eisen of the NFL Network has a saying every year that he loves to repeat. Punters are people too. That is the truth, and as cliché as it sounds, every team curses the though of a punter right up until they need one. While nobody can predict how the regular season will begin for the Washington Redskins, it is clear they may need the services of Sav Rocca a little more than usual. He had a solid season in 2012, averaging 43 yards per punt,Roger Goodell on Aaron Hernandez- 'It's, placing 22 inside the 20-yard line and making so opponents could only manage eight yards per return. With RGIII still a question mark,Encore demands- For Joe Flacco, the pressure’s on, there is likelihood the punt team might see the field more often than expected. That means Rocca must make sure he is ready. The fewer chances he gives the other team to have good field position, the better off the Redskins will be when Griffin does eventually return.
