Public Bathrooms in New York City

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks

One of the first things you learn upon arriving in New York City is that Starbucks contain the quasi-public bathrooms of this epicenter of Western civilization. There are two major reason for this:

  1. The city only provides one. (There are also about a dozen in the subway system, but they're not recommended)
  2. There is a Starbucks on virtually every corner and they do not post "restrooms are for customers only" signs.

The "Starbucks law" will help you out a lot. However, if you find yourself in a pedestrian-heavy areas, you might find yourself in a ridiculously long line several times longer than the coffee line.

That's where the New York City Public Toilet Map comes in... The preview on the site doesn't show you too many examples, but it does mention the SoHo Apple Store. I've been in there at least a dozen times and never even realized it had a public bathroom.

I don't own this map (yet), but happened to find myself in SoHo on Saturday, when it was packed by European tourists spending the formerly valuable currency known as the dollar. There was a line of about 20 at Starbucks on Spring Street by Lafayette Street. Fortunately I remembered that there's a Bloomingdales around the corner with three sets of bathrooms. There was no line.

Park runs away with Kraft Nabisco for second major title{eot}Associated Press4/7/2013 11:23:49 PMText Size
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Any drama left Sunday at Mission Hills was gone a few minutes after the final group teed off.
Robbing the Kraft Nabisco Championship of another exciting finish, Inbee Park doubled her lead to six strokes over playing partner Lizette Salas on the par-4 opening hole and ran away with her second major title.
Park made a 20-foot birdie putt, showing off a putting touch unmatched in women's golf, and Salas had a messy double bogey for a three-stroke swing.
That made my day much easier,Protecting bright ideas- How to safeguard your company’s in, that's for sure, Park said.
The 2008 U.S. Women's Open winner at Interlachen, Park closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 15 under, four strokes ahead of fellow South Korean player So Yeon Ryu.
It had been a while since I won a major. It feels very special, said the 24-year-old Park, the third straight South Korean major winner and the eighth in a row from Asia.
Park celebrated the victory with the traditional leap into Poppie's Pond.
It was great, Park said. That's the pond I've always wanted to jump in and I finally jumped in. It was a little bit chilly, though.
She also jumped from fourth to second in the world with her fifth LPGA Tour title and ninth worldwide win.
I only have one more spot to go, Park said.
She filled a water bottle in the pond.
That was for my dad, Park said. When I see him next week in Hawaii, I'm going to pour it over him. Yeah,Martinique shocks Canada in CONCACAF Gold Cup opener, that's what he wanted.
She stopped him from making the trip from South Korea to California.
He packed his bags and booked a ticket and everything and he was on his way, Park said. I called him and,Atletico Madrid signs striker Villa from Barcelona, like, said, 'Just don't come.' He was very mad because he really wanted to come. But really it was tough stopping him, but he actually listened to me. ... I stopped him because if he came,Cities hold the key to America’s evolution, not revolution, I would want to win so bad, but that might be on my mind playing today.
Park was four victories in her last 16 events. She won the LPGA Thailand in February in her season debut when Ariya Jutanugarn closed with a triple bogey to blow a two-stroke lead.
I've played five tournaments on the LPGA Tour and I've won two of them, which is a very good start, Park said. It's pressure off me for the rest of the season.
Last year, Park won twice, had six runner-up finishes and topped the money list. She won the Evian Masters in July in France, tied for third in her next start, added three straight second-place finishes and capped the run with a victory in October in the LPGA Malaysia.
I've seen Inbee do this before, top-ranked Stacy Lewis said. I played with her at Evian last year when she had, I think, 22 or 23 putts in the final round. When she rolls it, you can't beat her. She's the best putter on tour. The course here is a little softer than normal, so I think that's to her advantage.
The 22-year-old Ryu, playing five groups ahead of Park, shot a bogey-free 65 -- the best round of the week. Ryu is close friends with Park and they played a practice round together before the tournament.
She looks like she played another golf course, said Ryu, the 2011 U.S. Women's Open champion. This golf course is really hard, and especially before we started the tournament, she really worried about the game because her ball flight is a little low, but this golf course has pretty firm greens, so she said, 'Oh, I don't think I can stop it on the greens because my ball flight is too low.' ... I think she was lying to me.
Salas, the 23-year-old former University of Southern California player who grew up west of Los Angeles in Azusa, had a 79 to tie for 25th at 2 under.
Obviously, I'm not very pleased, Salas said. Very disappointed in myself.
After Park's low drive bounded down the middle of the fairway, Salas -- dressed in Trojans cardinal and gold -- hit into the deep left rough, 30 yards behind Park. Salas topped her second shot, advancing the ball only 15 yards, and left her third about 15 yards short of the green.
The second shot,Medicare won't pay for Eli Lilly Alzheimer', it just came a little too quick,Movers and Shakers 06-23-13, Salas said. Throughout the day, I was just really anxious and hit a lot of pulls today. I was just not myself today.
Salas chipped to 15 feet, watched Park hole her birdie putt, then two-putted for 6.
Park increased her lead to seven on the par-5 second, holing a 7-footer. She couldn't get birdie tries to fall on the next three holes, then dropped a stroke on the par-4 sixth after driving into the left-side water, ending her bogey-free run at 27 holes.
Park made a 22-footer for birdie on the par-3 eighth and got to 15 under with a 5-foot putt on the par-5 ninth. She made another bogey on the par-10th, leaving her four strokes ahead of Ryu.
Park made a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-4 12th and a 10-footer on the par-4 13th to push her lead back to six at 16 under. She nearly made it three straight birdies, but her 12-footer lipped out on the par-3 14th. She missed a short putt to bogey the par-3 17th, and closed with a par.
Lewis, the 2011 winner, tied for 32nd at 1 under after a 72.
After winning consecutive events in Singapore and Phoenix to take the top spot in the world from Yani Tseng, Lewis tied for ninth two weeks in Carlsbad and was never in contention at Mission Hills.
It's been crazy, Lewis. I expected to get the attention at the tournaments and at the course, but I've been surprised at things off the course.
DIVOTS: Park earned $300,000. She's the third South Korean winner at Mission Hills, following Grace Park (2004) and Sun Young Yoo (2012). ... Suzann Pettersen (69) and Caroline Hedwall (68) tied for third at 9 under. ... Tseng closed with a 74 to tie for 48th at 2 over. Winless in more than a year, she dropped to No. 3 in the world. ... Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old New Zealand amateur who won the Canadian Women's Open last August to become the youngest LPGA Tour champion, had a 69 to tie for 25th at 2 under -- the best score among the amateurs. I'm very happy and excited to get low am, Ko said. I finished well and that is the biggest thing for me.

Belltown: No place for a kid? (Photo: Gene Balk/The Seattle Times)
Starting over in a new city is stressful,Mariners head to break with first sweep of season in_0,Nike San Diego Chargers jerseys, even more so if you don t have friends there already.? You have a million questions who can you turn to for recommendations and advice?
For anyone moving to Seattle and needing information, one great resource is Reddit, the online social media community.? Seattle has one of the most active city and newcomers often post questions for locals about life in the Emerald City.
This week, one couple who are in the process of relocating to Seattle to the Reddit community.? The couple asked for help finding a neighborhood where they won t have to deal with kids:
We love our nieces and nephews, but call us terrible people: we don t have kids and really would prefer to not have a lot of kids around when we are trying to relax at home What s a good area/apartment building that doesn t have a lot of kids around?
Redditors were quick to let this couple know that they re relocating to the right place.? The top-rated reply suggested that any area of the city would do: Children aren t illegal per se in Seattle,Nike Washington Redskins jerseys, but having them is generally discouraged.

Indeed, Seattle has one of the lowest percentages of kids of any city in the U.S.? Just 16 percent of Seattle s population is under 18, according to 2013 estimates from data provider Experian.
Still, even in Seattle, there is a wide range of childlessness from neighborhood to neighborhood.? The most child-heavy area Laurelhurst has 11 times the concentration of kids as Belltown, the neighborhood with the lowest percentage of children.
Redditors mostly got it right.? Four of the top five childless neighborhoods were highly recommended to the kid-averse couple: Belltown, Downtown, Lower Queen Anne and the University District.? However, nobody suggested Westlake, the No. 5 neighborhood.
And the most frequently mentioned neighborhood in the Reddit responses Capitol Hill has an under-18 population at 8 percent.? Not bad, but just outside the top 10.

In response to feedback from readers wanting more data on neighborhoods, I ve added this chart showing the top and bottom 10.? Click to enlarge:

Early Lessons from NFL Training Camps
After the rookie wage scale was added to the new collective bargaining agreement, we all assumed that training camp holdouts from rookies would be, like the first day of high school,Filmmaker on NFL head trauma- ‘I didn’, a distant, ugly memory.
Things have not quite turned out that way, as two of the top 10 draft picks have yet to report to camp as they wait for new deals (Jonathan Cooper agreed to terms with the Cardinals,Report- NFL ditches Pro Bowl format for fantasy draft, according to .)
The last two rookies to be signed are cornerback Dee Milliner (Jets) and guard Chance Warmack (Titans). If there is a rookie wage scale in place, then what is taking so long to get these guys under contract? (Update:Dee Milliner has agreed to terms with the Jets, of the New YorkDaily News).
The contractual war is being waged over offset language,Supplemental Draft brings increased risks for NFL," which, if in place, would stop players from double-dipping if they are released and want to sign with a new team.
In other words,The NFL has banned fanny packs from stadiums, if these players turn out to be total busts and fail to play out their contract, they want to somehowbe rewarded for it.
On the surface, this seems like a trivial reason to stage a holdout. However, this is one of the only areas of the contract that players can actually fight for, and teams don t want to set a precedent by not protecting themselves from bad contracts.
Jonathan Cooper s deal, signed on Sunday,How the NFL Became America's Sport, does include offset language, but it remains to be seen whether or not teams point to that as an excuse for players to cave in.

BEAVERCREEK Despite the rain, the flag waved proudly July 4 as Dayton (6-2-5), exploded on to their home field and immediately went to work against Rochester (3-7-6).The early energy push the Dutch Lions to a 3-1 victory.

A quick ball sent up from the back in the 1st minute to Dayton s Gibson Bardsley resulted in a shot on goal that just missed wide of the far post. Rochester began to find their feet in the 26th minute with a shot from Gabe Latigue that just curved left of the goal.

But, in the 38th minute, the Rhinos didn t miss and a light cross to the head of Blake Brettschneider put the Rhinos on the board first.

The equalizer came in the 44th minute for the Lions with Eli Garner receiving a pass from Bardsley and making a run, Garner wasted no time and put it in the back of the net. The half ended in a tie 1-1.

Titans signalling plays to defence in camp to avoid huddling against NFL's fast,导入空标题
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NFL offences are moving faster and faster, speeding up the tempo to take advantage of defences. So the Tennessee Titans are trying to scratch out a precious few extra seconds. They are practicing without the player-coach helmet communication system during training camp."That's just part of the process of getting better at what we're going to see a lot during the season is no-huddle and people trying to take advantage of that and trying to frustrate you and trying to get you not lined up right," Titans coach Mike Munchak said Thursday."So we're working on all different ways to communicate with the players on the field, like all teams do,导入空标题, but something we need to get better at and work at it."Three to four people are signalling in plays to the defence, with the Titans expected to look to the sideline for the call. The move avoids having to huddle up and get the signal from the person wearing the helmet with the co-ordinator's voice in his ear, and that buys precious time to prepare for whatever the offence is trying to do.An added bonus is their practice plan will help during games if the helmet system breaks down or if the defender wearing the helmet gets injured."That headset could go off anytime in the game,导入空标题," linebacker Moise Fokou said. "If you have your d-linemen plus everyone else on the field know what the call is, the margin for error is a lot smaller in setting up your defence. I think we're doing a tremendous job not using the headset as much because it prepares us for those moments."The Titans had plenty of issues last year using the helmet device when middle linebacker Colin McCarthy missed seven games due to injury. They also wound up allowing a franchise-worst 471 points, giving up 30 or more points in six of the first seven games.Defensive co-ordinator Jerry Gray said they are making every defensive player learn the signals."We're going through signal call meetings and all those things, and that's what I think we got to make sure we're ahead of the curve instead of waiting till something happens," Gray said. "Let's go out and make it happen. Be in front of it."For defenders, it's pretty easy to fall back into old habits. Cornerback Jason McCourty points out signals came in from the sideline in college, where there's no microphone in the helmet like what the NFL allows for one player on defence to use to help counter the helmet used by quarterbacks on offence. McCourty likes the variety."When you get in a game with Tom Brady or a guy like Peyton Manning and they're not huddling and they're getting to the line and moving fast, we got to be able, especially the guys in the secondary, we don't always have time to get to the huddle, so to be able to look to the sideline, you can get the signal and go," McCourty said.Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey said signalling forces the Titans to make sure they hear the call and be more disciplined to avoid a busted play messing up the whole defence. Not huddling allows the defence to line up before the offence."Everybody's already in their spots and you can get down," Casey said. "Once you get down in your stance, offensive linemen,导入空标题, they don't know how to figure out certain things. It gives us a little bit of an advantage."Having time — even 2 or 3 seconds — can help defenders focus on the next play and stop worrying about what just happened."We always say on defence, stay ahead of the offence," McCourty said. "When they're shifting and they're motioning and giving you different things, if you're not aligned right before the snap you're not going to be able to beat the play. So as much as we can get started before they do, that's going to help us in the long run."Notes: McCarthy missed practice Thursday and will have an MRI for what Munchak called a sore leg. McCarthy just practiced with the first-team defence for the first time Wednesday. ... Chris Johnson did not practice after rolling his right ankle and said he will check with trainers Friday. RB Jalen Parmele also sat out with a sore ankle. ... LB Zaviar Gooden limped off late in practice,导入空标题, and Munchak said he appeared to get caught up in a pile.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org___Follow Teresa M. GLENDALE, Ariz.: Arizona's Cooper motivated to live up expectations
GLENDALE, Ariz. The highest draft picks in the NFL aren't usually guards.Jonathan Cooper is an exception, and he expects to be exceptional.Cooper, chosen seventh overall out of North Carolina by the Arizona Cardinals, went through his first training camp workout on Monday after signing a four-year contract worth about $14.5 million. Now, he says his motivation is to live up to expectations, to prove to everyone that he's worth the money."Just being drafted that high, no matter what position,This Weekend in Sports- 2013 NFL Hall of Fame Game, I feel like you feel immense pressure," he said. "I know I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed. I know there are a lot of people depending on me."The 6-foot-2, 311-pound lineman is the first guard selected in the top eight since Mike Munchak went No. 8 to the Houston Oilers 31 years ago.Cooper, penciled in as Arizona's starting left guard, missed the first three days of training camp while his agent and the Cardinals wrangled over contract details. He went through his conditioning test on Monday morning."Breezed through it, really," coach Bruce Arians said. Then Cooper was immediately with the line for the starting unit for the morning walkthrough."I love his attitude,Dolphins have first fight of training camp," quarterback Carson Palmer said. "He's a glass half-full,NFL Players Arrested Since 2013 Super Bowl, happy-go-lucky guy smile on his face, loves football. It's hard to love football at the offensive line position in training camp. To come in and run the conditioning test right off the bat and then get thrown in on the first play with a smile on his face is what I like seeing."On Monday afternoon, he went through his first practice with pads."It was tough, as I thought it would be," Cooper said. "I was pleased early on. I started fairly strong and I tailed off a little bit at the end, making a few errors."He said it was difficult waiting at home in Wilmington, N.C., while the Cardinals started camp started across the country."Anticipation, it kills me," Cooper said. "(I) just start questioning 'Will I be able to get back right in and plug back in? It's going to be tough. Am I conditioning myself? Am I pushing myself enough while I'm here at home? What do the rest of the guys think about me?' All that kind of stuff, that was really mentally taxing."But I came back and I have been surprised at myself and hopefully surprising some others."Center Lyle Sendlein said he didn't see any major mistakes from Cooper in the first workout. Sendlein already had been impressed with the big guard during offseason workouts."In the spring,Police found shell casings linking ex, I got the sense of him being a great technician," Sendlein said. "He's got great feet and hands and he plays with good knee bend and he's a smart guy."That time in the offseason has lessened any impact of missing a couple of days of training camp."It definitely prepared me for the professional mindset, the way to go about practice, just what to expect and kind of not let that fear and doubt keep me from continuing to go forward,Gay former NFL players Esera Tualo and Wade Davis," Cooper said. "I definitely don't think I'd be prepared and ready to succeed had I not had those OTAs under my belt."The Cardinals are counting on Cooper to help solidify a line that's a major question mark entering Arians' first season. Two days before Cooper arrived, the coach criticized the line for making too many mental mistakes. Then the team lost right guard Daryn Colledge to an irritated nerve in his right leg during the first practice in pads on Sunday.Cooper said he wants to focus on the mundane chore of just getting better at learning plays and improving his technique. The first-team All-American also wants to avoid getting caught up in the accolades he already has received in early reviews from his teammates and coaches."It comes down to trying to prove people right and not let people down," he said, "so I can't really focus on the glitz and glamour aspects of it until I've shown them that I've earned this and I belong here."As a person, he's already impressed."I've only been around for a little bit but you can tell he's a good dude," Palmer said. "He's a good person. He's going to be a great guy in the community. He's going to represent this organization very well. You can't draft guys like that high enough."---Online:AP NFL site: http://pro32.ap.org
