Since the second half of the 20th century, the concept of World Literature has been rejuvenated and re-oriented from Goethe’s original notion of Weltliteratur, understood as a canon of texts that are read globally beyond national boundaries, to an international field were literatures and peoples meet. Processes of decolonization and of globalization, of migration, and exile have produced a rich body of literature of mobility that explores and reflects on postcolonial and migrant experiences, diasporic, exile, and refugee conditions. Literatures of mobility and textual exchange lend themselves to the analysis of the complex processes of interactive and dialogic dynamics between and across cultures and their creative expressions. These three sessions will focus on significant literary and theoretical works about cultural encounters occurring in various parts of the world in order to study key elements, thematic and aesthetic aspects of this emerging New World Literature. The papers examine major critical approaches to this literature and discuss theoretical foundations of key concepts. Also, they rethink the phenomenon of World Literature and existing and possible new theories of cultural negotiation and translation. | |||
Session I: Rethinking Exile. Papers focus on new perspective on exile as New World Literature. If an early exile literature research of the 1970s and 1980s years did its best still to describe exile literature as literature of resistance or dominated by nostalgia, current discussions broaden this perspective and turn the attention towards the transcultural and transnational dimensions of exile. | |||
Session II: Between and Across Borders. Papers focus on transcultural literary works interested in the interactive and dialogic dynamics between and across borders following mainly two perspectives: the self-distancing, self-estrangement and self-criticism of one’s own cultural identities, and/or acknowledging the transitory, confluential, and mutually transforming nature of cultures. | |||
Session III: Encountering the Other(s). Papers focus on texts that demonstrate a search for “encountering the other(s)” as a direct expression of their creators transcultural realities or sensibilities, presenting a kind of writing that is different in its resistance to being appropriated by one single national canon, one monolingual tradition or one single cultural/ethnic expression. | |||

In der jüngeren kulturwissenschaftlichen Methodendiskussion zeichnet sich eine Paradigmenergänzung ab, die die Fokussierung der cultural studies beispielsweise auf die Forschungsgebiete von gender, class und race erweitert, indem sie das menschliche Naturverhältnis als eigenständigen Forschungsgegenstand ernst nimmt und Kultur in den Kategorien lebendiger, organischer Systeme zu erfassen sucht. Grundfragen dabei lauten: Inwieweit lassen sich strukturelle Parallelen von natürlichen und kulturellen Prozessabläufen ausmachen? Können ökologische, biologische Beschreibungsmodelle auch für die Analyse gesellschaftlicher oder ästhetischer Phänomene fruchtbar gemacht werden? Organisieren sich jene Diskurse, die traditionell dem Geist bzw. der Kultur zugeordnet werden, nicht vielmehr nach Mustern der Natur resp. des Leibes? Diese Fragen eröffnen ein reizvolles, ertragreiches Beschäftigungsfeld. ==An Odyssey for our time: Barbara Köhler’s Niemands Frau---An interdisciplinary symposium, 9-10 September 2011 at St Hilda’s College, Oxford | |||
In Niemands Frau (2007), the poet Barbara Köhler returns to the Odyssey, the 3000-year-old tale of a hero’s return, not to retell it, but to follow some of the threads it has woven into the cultural tradition of the West – and to unravel them, just as Penelope, the wife of the hero who, when it suited him, called himself Nobody (Odyss – oútis), set to work each night to unravel the web she wove and re-wove by day. Köhler’s return to the Odyssey takes place under the sign of a grammatical shift, from ‘er’ to ‘sie’, from the singular hero to a plurality of female voices – Nausikaa, Persephone, Circe, Calypso, Ino Leukothea, Helena, and Penelope herself – with implications for thinking about the human subject (for whom Odysseus was, in Horkheimer and Adorno’s reading, the literary prototype), about gender and relationality, but also about the corporeality and multivocality which underlies the ‘virtual reality’ of the written or printed text. With its rhythmic musicality and its polyvalent meanings, Köhler’s poem-cycle revalorises the siren song of poetic speech in the face of an age given to instrumental Feststellung. | |||
This complex, forceful, and philosophically engaged work is to be the focus of a day-and-a-half-long symposium at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, envisaged as the first in a series of interdisciplinary events on the legacy of the works of classical Greece and Rome in contemporary European literature. Scholars from a range of disciplines will come together to exchange perspectives on and readings of Köhler’s Niemands Frau cycle in the presence of the poet herself, who will give a reading from the work on the Friday evening of the symposium. | |||

In recent years we have seen a growing impatience with nation-bound approaches to studies in literature, history and culture, and a turn to more transnational investigations. In an era in which global flows of information and capital delineate power relations, scholars have increasingly produced histories that re-orient our notion of the nation-state and explain the roots of contemporary geopolitics. This approach emphasizes the permeability of national boundaries due to im/migration, diasporas, exiles, forced migration, imperial and colonial dominations, as well as political contests of power. | |||
Our conference is interested in this new transnational perspective. In two sessions we will explore the complex crossing of boundaries and the emerging new space of the “transnational”. We are not simply assuming that there is such a space. Our purpose is more critical. We will explore the very possibility of innovative loci of enunciation and ways in which such a space has been formed and is been forming through activities in thought, literature, and media. | |||

In der Physik bezeichnet der Begriff der Verdichtung | |||
Formumwandlungsprozesse, in deren Verlauf Volumina ab-, Dichtegrade hingegen | |||
zunehmen. Erst die Verdichtung von Kraftstoffgemischen in | |||
Verbrennungsmotoren steigert die Energieleistung, so dass sich ein | |||
effizienter Wirkungsquotient einstellt. In der Unfallchirurgie begegnen | |||
Verdichtungsprozesse, wenn Wundkompressen Druck auf traumatisiertes Gewebe | |||
ausüben und die Blutstillung beschleunigen. In der Forst- und Landwirtschaft | |||
wie auch im Bauwesen bestimmt der Verdichtungsgrad die Bodenqualität. In der | |||
Tontechnik meint Verdichtung die Einschränkung der Dynamik eines Signals, um | |||
es optimaler zu steuern. Und für einen Espresso muss Kaffee verdichtet | |||
werden, so dass das mit Druck hindurchgeleitete Wasser den typischen | |||
Geschmack extrahiert. Außer in naturkundlichen und physisch-physikalischen | |||
Zusammenhängen begegnet der Begriff der Verdichtung indessen auch in | |||
psychologischen, symbolischen, medialen, soziologischen und | |||
regierungstechnischen Kontexten. Hier ist er weniger ein technisches | |||
Verfahren als vielmehr ein Gegenstand der Rede und Vorstellung, eine | |||
Metapher oder Denkfigur. Vor diesem Hintergrund und mit Blick auf | |||
unterschiedliche Wissensgebiete wird sich der Workshop dem Begriff und dem | |||
Bild der ‚Verdichtung‘ als poetologischem Konstrukt und als spezifischer | |||
Darstellungspraxis widmen. | |||
Die Psychologie etwa versteht unter Verdichtung die Überlagerung und | |||
wechselseitige Durchdringung von Begriffsfiguren und bildlichen | |||
Vorstellungen, von Erinnerungen oder antizipativen Phantasien. Sigmund Freud | |||
merkt zur Traumarbeit an, dass eine Art Komprimierung als wesentlicher | |||
Mechanismus dafür sorge, mit nur wenigen Elementen des manifesten Traums | |||
mehrere Elemente der latenten Traumgedanken abzubilden. Im Anschluss an | |||
Freud beschrieb Roman Jakobson Verdichtungsvorgänge bei der Metaphernbildung | |||
im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch. Metaphern verkürzen die Rede, verleihen ihr | |||
Prägnanz und Anschaulichkeit und machen überkomplexe Gegenstände sinnlich | |||
erfahr- und oftmals erst aussprechbar. Auf dem Feld poetischer und | |||
künstlerischer Produktion lassen sich folglich Gattungen und Schreibweisen | |||
allgemein unter der Perspektive quantitativer wie qualitativer | |||

Indem derlei Verdichtungsprozesse auf komplexe Sachverhalte antworten, zielt | |||
ihr Einsatz keinesfalls nur auf eine Vereinfachung von Wahrnehmungs-, Denk- | |||
und Darstellungsprozessen. Im Gegenteil: Eine angemessene kognitive, | |||
repräsentationale und gouvernementale Bewältigung vielschichtiger | |||
Zusammenhänge scheint durch gewisse Operationen der Verdichtung überhaupt | |||
erst möglich. Wenn Verdichtungsprozesse auf eine Steigerung und Optimierung | |||
von Systemläufen, Darstellungsprozeduren, von Archivierungs- und | |||
Erinnerungspraktiken ausgerichtet sind; wenn davon ausgegangen werden kann, | |||
dass ‚Verdichtung‘ das Komprimierungsverfahren wie auch das Ergebnis | |||
desselben meint, mit dessen Hilfe man auf verschiedenen Ebenen operieren | |||
kann, dann stellen sich grundsätzliche Fragen: Reagieren Verdichtungen | |||
reflexiv oder als soziokulturell gewachsene, kognitiv, politisch, poetisch | |||
eingeübte und routinisierte Orthopraktiken auf Gegebenes? Sind | |||
Verdichtungsvorgänge als fahrlässige Auslassungen oder | |||
entindividualisierende Nivellierungen zu disqualifizieren, wenn sie im Zuge | |||
der Reduzierung quantitativer wie qualitativer Komplexitäten auf die | |||

Since the second half of the 20th century, the concept of World Literature has been rejuvenated and re-oriented from Goethe’s original notion of Weltliteratur, understood as a canon of texts that are read globally beyond national boundaries, to an international field were literatures and peoples meet. Processes of decolonization and of globalization, of migration, and exile have produced a rich body of literature of mobility that explores and reflects on postcolonial and migrant experiences, diasporic, exile, and refugee conditions. Literatures of mobility and textual exchange lend themselves to the analysis of the complex processes of interactive and dialogic dynamics between and across cultures and their creative expressions. These three sessions will focus on significant literary and theoretical works about cultural encounters occurring in various parts of the world in order to study key elements, thematic and aesthetic aspects of this emerging New World Literature. The papers examine major critical approaches to this literature and discuss theoretical foundations of key concepts. Also, they rethink the phenomenon of World Literature and existing and possible new theories of cultural negotiation and translation.
Session I: Rethinking Exile. Papers focus on new perspective on exile as New World Literature. If an early exile literature research of the 1970s and 1980s years did its best still to describe exile literature as literature of resistance or dominated by nostalgia, current discussions broaden this perspective and turn the attention towards the transcultural and transnational dimensions of exile.
Session II: Between and Across Borders. Papers focus on transcultural literary works interested in the interactive and dialogic dynamics between and across borders following mainly two perspectives: the self-distancing, self-estrangement and self-criticism of one’s own cultural identities, and/or acknowledging the transitory, confluential, and mutually transforming nature of cultures.
Session III: Encountering the Other(s). Papers focus on texts that demonstrate a search for “encountering the other(s)” as a direct expression of their creators transcultural realities or sensibilities, presenting a kind of writing that is different in its resistance to being appropriated by one single national canon, one monolingual tradition or one single cultural/ethnic expression.

Erkundungen einer kulturanthropologischen Denkfigur- Call for Papers - In der jüngeren kulturwissenschaftlichen Methodendiskussion zeichnet sich eine Paradigmenergänzung ab, die die Fokussierung der cultural studies beispielsweise auf die Forschungsgebiete von gender, class und race erweitert, indem sie das menschliche Naturverhältnis als eigenständigen Forschungsgegenstand ernst nimmt und Kultur in den Kategorien lebendiger, organischer Systeme zu erfassen sucht. Grundfragen dabei lauten: Inwieweit lassen sich strukturelle Parallelen von natürlichen und kulturellen Prozessabläufen ausmachen? Können ökologische, biologische Beschreibungsmodelle auch für die Analyse gesellschaftlicher oder ästhetischer Phänomene fruchtbar gemacht werden? Organisieren sich jene Diskurse, die traditionell dem Geist bzw. der Kultur zugeordnet werden, nicht vielmehr nach Mustern der Natur resp. des Leibes? Diese Fragen eröffnen ein reizvolles, ertragreiches Beschäftigungsfeld. ==An Odyssey for our time: Barbara Köhler’s Niemands Frau---An interdisciplinary symposium, 9-10 September 2011 at St Hilda’s College, Oxford In Niemands Frau (2007), the poet Barbara Köhler returns to the Odyssey, the 3000-year-old tale of a hero’s return, not to retell it, but to follow some of the threads it has woven into the cultural tradition of the West – and to unravel them, just as Penelope, the wife of the hero who, when it suited him, called himself Nobody (Odyss – oútis), set to work each night to unravel the web she wove and re-wove by day. Köhler’s return to the Odyssey takes place under the sign of a grammatical shift, from ‘er’ to ‘sie’, from the singular hero to a plurality of female voices – Nausikaa, Persephone, Circe, Calypso, Ino Leukothea, Helena, and Penelope herself – with implications for thinking about the human subject (for whom Odysseus was, in Horkheimer and Adorno’s reading, the literary prototype), about gender and relationality, but also about the corporeality and multivocality which underlies the ‘virtual reality’ of the written or printed text. With its rhythmic musicality and its polyvalent meanings, Köhler’s poem-cycle revalorises the siren song of poetic speech in the face of an age given to instrumental Feststellung. This complex, forceful, and philosophically engaged work is to be the focus of a day-and-a-half-long symposium at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, envisaged as the first in a series of interdisciplinary events on the legacy of the works of classical Greece and Rome in contemporary European literature. Scholars from a range of disciplines will come together to exchange perspectives on and readings of Köhler’s Niemands Frau cycle in the presence of the poet herself, who will give a reading from the work on the Friday evening of the symposium. DESCRIPTION: The contributions of Jewish Austrians to Modern Austrian Literature and Culture have been most significant throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and continue to thrive after the Shoah and into the twenty-first century. This conference will seek to answer some of the following questions within this vast topic or address some of the topics and questions outlined below, and we welcome papers that address other issues of Jews and/or Jewish Austrian in Modern Austrian Literature as well. Inhabiting the Transnational
CFP: Conference/Department of Comparative Literature/ State University of New York at Binghamton Friday, February 20, 2009, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., LT 1506
In recent years we have seen a growing impatience with nation-bound approaches to studies in literature, history and culture, and a turn to more transnational investigations. In an era in which global flows of information and capital delineate power relations, scholars have increasingly produced histories that re-orient our notion of the nation-state and explain the roots of contemporary geopolitics. This approach emphasizes the permeability of national boundaries due to im/migration, diasporas, exiles, forced migration, imperial and colonial dominations, as well as political contests of power. Our conference is interested in this new transnational perspective. In two sessions we will explore the complex crossing of boundaries and the emerging new space of the “transnational”. We are not simply assuming that there is such a space. Our purpose is more critical. We will explore the very possibility of innovative loci of enunciation and ways in which such a space has been formed and is been forming through activities in thought, literature, and media.

The Division on 20th Century German Literature invites proposals for three sessions on "Sites of the Aesthetic." After decades of culturalist criticism, recent scholarship has witnessed a renewed interest in aesthetic experience and its role in various arenas of literary, artistic, and cultural production. The division welcomes submission of papers that explore different theories, practices, and institutional dimensions of the aesthetic in twentieth- and early twenty-first century German culture. What is the specificity of aesthetic experience? How does the aesthetic manifest itself in different forms, genres, and objects of cultural activity? What is the role of aesthetic experience in the academy, in politics, or in advertising and the economy?

Wissen in der Literatur, "Verdichtung"
Internationaler Workshop in der Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft,
veranstaltet vom PhD-Net „Das Wissen der Literatur“, an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Institut für deutsche Literatur)
In der Physik bezeichnet der Begriff der Verdichtung Formumwandlungsprozesse, in deren Verlauf Volumina ab-, Dichtegrade hingegen zunehmen. Erst die Verdichtung von Kraftstoffgemischen in Verbrennungsmotoren steigert die Energieleistung, so dass sich ein effizienter Wirkungsquotient einstellt. In der Unfallchirurgie begegnen Verdichtungsprozesse, wenn Wundkompressen Druck auf traumatisiertes Gewebe ausüben und die Blutstillung beschleunigen. In der Forst- und Landwirtschaft wie auch im Bauwesen bestimmt der Verdichtungsgrad die Bodenqualität. In der Tontechnik meint Verdichtung die Einschränkung der Dynamik eines Signals, um es optimaler zu steuern. Und für einen Espresso muss Kaffee verdichtet werden, so dass das mit Druck hindurchgeleitete Wasser den typischen Geschmack extrahiert. Außer in naturkundlichen und physisch-physikalischen Zusammenhängen begegnet der Begriff der Verdichtung indessen auch in psychologischen, symbolischen, medialen, soziologischen und regierungstechnischen Kontexten. Hier ist er weniger ein technisches Verfahren als vielmehr ein Gegenstand der Rede und Vorstellung, eine Metapher oder Denkfigur. Vor diesem Hintergrund und mit Blick auf unterschiedliche Wissensgebiete wird sich der Workshop dem Begriff und dem Bild der ‚Verdichtung‘ als poetologischem Konstrukt und als spezifischer Darstellungspraxis widmen.
Die Psychologie etwa versteht unter Verdichtung die Überlagerung und wechselseitige Durchdringung von Begriffsfiguren und bildlichen Vorstellungen, von Erinnerungen oder antizipativen Phantasien. Sigmund Freud merkt zur Traumarbeit an, dass eine Art Komprimierung als wesentlicher Mechanismus dafür sorge, mit nur wenigen Elementen des manifesten Traums mehrere Elemente der latenten Traumgedanken abzubilden. Im Anschluss an Freud beschrieb Roman Jakobson Verdichtungsvorgänge bei der Metaphernbildung im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch. Metaphern verkürzen die Rede, verleihen ihr Prägnanz und Anschaulichkeit und machen überkomplexe Gegenstände sinnlich erfahr- und oftmals erst aussprechbar. Auf dem Feld poetischer und künstlerischer Produktion lassen sich folglich Gattungen und Schreibweisen allgemein unter der Perspektive quantitativer wie qualitativer Verdichtungsprozesse sondieren. Zu guter Letzt sind Verdichtungspraktiken am Werk, wenn es um die normalisierende Konstitution des neuzeitlichen Subjekts geht und wenn das biopolitische Kalkül auf moderne Massen-Gesellschaften zielt, um Durchschnittswerte zu ermitteln und festzuschreiben, die wiederum zur Lenkung und Verwaltung des Kollektivs und seines Körpers dienen. Indem derlei Verdichtungsprozesse auf komplexe Sachverhalte antworten, zielt ihr Einsatz keinesfalls nur auf eine Vereinfachung von Wahrnehmungs-, Denk- und Darstellungsprozessen. Im Gegenteil: Eine angemessene kognitive, repräsentationale und gouvernementale Bewältigung vielschichtiger Zusammenhänge scheint durch gewisse Operationen der Verdichtung überhaupt erst möglich. Wenn Verdichtungsprozesse auf eine Steigerung und Optimierung von Systemläufen, Darstellungsprozeduren, von Archivierungs- und Erinnerungspraktiken ausgerichtet sind; wenn davon ausgegangen werden kann, dass ‚Verdichtung‘ das Komprimierungsverfahren wie auch das Ergebnis desselben meint, mit dessen Hilfe man auf verschiedenen Ebenen operieren kann, dann stellen sich grundsätzliche Fragen: Reagieren Verdichtungen reflexiv oder als soziokulturell gewachsene, kognitiv, politisch, poetisch eingeübte und routinisierte Orthopraktiken auf Gegebenes? Sind Verdichtungsvorgänge als fahrlässige Auslassungen oder entindividualisierende Nivellierungen zu disqualifizieren, wenn sie im Zuge der Reduzierung quantitativer wie qualitativer Komplexitäten auf die „Herstellung von mittleren Gemeinsamen“ (Freud) abzielen? Ermöglichen Verdichtungsprozesse durch solche reduktiven Operationen nicht zuallererst Vergleichbarkeiten im großen Maßstab? Unter produktions- und rezeptionsästhetischen Gesichtspunkten ist zudem zu fragen, ob in jeder Verdichtung nicht von Anfang an ihre (analytische, interpretatorische, referenzielle) Ausweitung im Sinne einer ‚Entdichtung‘ angelegt ist? Was wird in Verfahren der Verdichtungen sichtbar bzw. unsichtbar gemacht? Ist Verdichtung als eine Kulturtechnik zu begreifen, die im Spannungsfeld von techné und poiesis verortet ist? Und inwiefern lässt sich Verdichtung als methodisches Konzept begreifen, das eine spezifische Analyseform kultureller Sachlagen bestimmt (‚dichte Beschreibung‘)?
Ziel des Workshops ist es, das Konzept der Verdichtung für die kulturwissenschaftliche Forschung zu erproben. Zu diesem Zweck bieten mehrere Themencluster Raum, den aufgeworfenen Fragen mit wissenspoetologischer, diskursanalytischer, narratologischer, kunstkritischer und medien- wie literaturgeschichtlicher Perspektive nachzugehen. Figurations of Knowledge
From 2 to 7 June 2008, the Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung is hosting the 5th biannual European conference of the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (SLSA). Under the heading of 'Figurations of Knowledge' the conference comprises eleven thematic streams with more than two hundred talks. In seinem neuen Buch "Denken und Selbstsein" entwickelt Dieter Henrich Gedanken zur Begründung der Subjektivität. Uwe Justus Wenzel ist für die NZZ den nicht immer einfachen Gedanken mit großem Interesse und sogar Genuss gefolgt: "Die 'Unverständlichkeit des Zentrums der Subjektivität' und die daraus erwachsende Irritation des bewussten Lebens, das der Mensch ist und führt, bilden die leitmotivisch wiederkehrende These. Sie wird in einer Exposition und drei Durchführungen variiert und entfaltet. Die Gedankengänge sind komplex und ihrer Umsichtigkeit wegen bisweilen umständlich (wie ihr Urheber nüchtern festhält). Sorgsame Umständlichkeit entwickelt allerdings, so sie sich in einer fließenden Sprache artikuliert, eine eigene Eleganz."
